Which Toys Will Baby Enjoy Most in His or Her First Year?

Basket filled with baby toys

I recently have been “spring cleaning” in a sense. No, it’s not spring but with baby #2 coming soon I realized I should reorganize my daughter’s room to make room for my son’s half of the nursery. One of the things I came across were her old toy bins stuffed far back in the closet.  As I began sorting through them I put aside her favorite toys — those that really made a difference in the first year. What follows is my overview of the top toys your newborn baby will probably get the most use out of in his or her first year of life.

[Disclosure: Some of the following links are referral/affiliate links from Amazon or Target, which means if you purchase the item directly from the link, I will make a small commission. However, the price costs the same whether you access the link through this site or elsewhere. For more info check out my Disclosures page.]

1. Sophie the Giraffe I boycotted this toy at first. I thought, “There is no way this toy is just that good and my baby doesn’t need one.” Plus it’s expensive for what it is, retailing at around $25. Well, eventually we were gifted one – I think my daughter was a few months old at the time – and she too jumped in on the phenomenon. The reason this is one of the most popular go-to baby toys is because it is just that effective. Every baby seems to take to it immediately. Why? It’s made of rubber so is a natural teething toy and easy to grip for little hands to grab hold of. This product just works and I will have no hesitation about using it with my second baby. (Note: there were some recent reports earlier this year about a mom’s giraffe containing mold after using it for two years so I will probably just buy a new one for my second to be safe – as a teething toy, this giraffe does require maintenance from time to time).

2. Alphabet and Numbers Foam Floor Puzzle Mat  –

With 36 interconnecting foam tiles, this large floor mat covers a lot of space and is the perfect accessory to any baby nursery, or living room if you have hardwood floors. There are many variations of this product sold all over – I just saw one at TJ Maxx earlier today on sale for $9.99 and occasionally this will go on sale at Babies “R” Us. The link above redirects you to Amazon. But wherever you purchase it, this foam mat makes for a comfortable, soft surface for your baby to practice rolling over or tummy time while you watch close by. As an extra bonus, it is a fun introduction to the alphabet!

3. Bestever Baby Mat by Mary Meyer – When I saw this in store I immediately fell in love. This makes for the perfect shower gift and we have gifted them to a few of our friends and family expecting newborns because they really are the cutest, most cuddliest mats ever. (There’s a matching one with blue tummy for boys as well as a range of different animals available like lambs, lions etc.) I think this bear reminded me of an oversized Care Bear (something that is nostalgic for me) so I was super thrilled when I found this online and even more thrilled when I saw one of my best friends purchase this from my registry. The perfect tummy time mat, it also makes for cute photos and is something we have kept in my daughter’s nursery for continuous playtime.

4. Balls, Balls and More Balls of all Kinds – It doesn’t really matter which one you get for your baby, but my daughter and all her baby friends absolutely LOVED playing with balls. In fact, ball was my husband’s first word, or so he tells me. Pictured below is the Oball with rattle, as well as the Oball Classic ball toy – with holes perfect for little hands to grip and play. We also have an assortment of ball pit balls, the Oball Rattle & Roll car (we purchased on Amazon), a small plushy basketball and various sensory balls – great for tactile development and practicing hand eye coordination and what have you. At 3 years old, my daughter still likes to throw these around from time to time.

5. Stroller Toys, Crinkly Toys/Books and Play Key Set – Not sure why babies love keys so much but they do! Our daughter still brings these out to play with. As a baby, she used to take the keys from room to room and, yes, eventually try to put it in her mouth. These particular ones were meant for teething and include an option to play music when you press the music note. We purchased them from Babies “R” Us. In addition to the teething play keys, you can never go wrong with various stroller toys to dangle above your baby for those long stroller walks outside or even to place hanging from their car seat for longer car trips. We liked the ones with crinkly plush accessories and/or crinkly soft books as babies get a kick out of hearing the little crinkle in their hands, and used the owl for the car. The easier it was for the toy to dangle within reach, the more effective these were at distracting our baby and keeping her entertained. The sensory development toy had a suction cup to place on the stroller itself – we used it more indoors on top of her Superseat, something she began using after 6 months old when they can sit up and literally spin toys all around them on a play tray while the seat itself can later transform into a booster seat to take with you to restaurants or just for helping baby to scoot around the house.

6. Baby Rattles – They make noise, they are cute to look at and fairly safe (with the hard ones we just had to be careful she didn’t bang it around). We had an assortment of rattles including the crinkly kind and soft plush kind (the giraffe ring) but our baby honestly took to them all.

7. Stuffed Animals and Soothing Light Up Toy – I began collecting plush stuffed animals for myself long before I ever had a baby (ahem, let’s see, I had my college bear, my collection of Care Bears which I kept in pristine condition, a plush Bambi toy from the Disney Store and my husband’s old tattered Mickey Mouse from his own childhood for starters). However, even if you don’t have a working stuffed animal collection to begin with, I recommend you start one for your baby. They are soft and cuddly and attractive – and while I don’t recommend you put them in your baby’s crib while they sleep as you want to prevent any suffocation risks or SIDS, they make for great additions to a toy chest. My daughter really took to the slithering snail toy (I think we purchased it from Ross for $5 or some other store like that), as well as plush butterfly pillow and Tilly, her rag doll from Ragtales, which we found in London at their popular John Lewis stores (we loved their baby department!!!) but it has since been made available online. Tilly became our daughter’s favorite doll and is still pulled out of the toy chest from time to time. However the NUMBER ONE favorite item of hers from when she was a newborn included in the below photograph was the Fisher Price Soothe & Grow Seahorse toy. We have purchased this for our cousin’s new baby as well because it was a lifesaver! My daughter was not the best sleeper as an infant but the music from the light up seahorse would calm her down and she loved to listen to it on repeat. When she got a little older, she learned how to press the seahorse’s stomach to play the music herself and if you press it twice the music automatically stops (perfect for when your baby eventually falls asleep and you want to let them doze in peaceful silence).

Stuffed animals and plush doll toys 8. Specialized Disney Toys – If you are a Disney fan like me, then the nursery has to have some touch of Mickey Mouse infused somewhere. We have a replica of Cinderella’s castle on one of the nursery walls in addition to a pillow with animated characters that we picked up in Tokyo Disneyland, but to add to the Mickey Mouse home decor, our daughter easily took to a barking Pluto toy that comes with a string to walk him around the house. I saw this at Disneyland in California shortly before her first birthday and she has been a fan of it ever since. The Mickey Mouse stuffed animal was on sale at Babies “R” Us and the soft baby blocks we purchased from Disney Studios in Burbank, CA when one of my friends, who happens to work for Disney, was kind enough to let me in — you can only enter if you know someone onsite. It was there that I went on a shopping spree at their onsite store which had plenty of discounted merchandise usually reserved for cast members, Disney employees and the like. However I recently saw these same baby blocks available for purchase at Disney Baby’s one retail location in Glendale, CA.

9. Stacking Toys, Sorters and Building Blocks – Babies love to stack objects on top of each other and these toys below, including the Fisher Price Rock-a-Stack and Baby’s 1st Blocks toys, helped my daughter learn all about shapes and sizes and matching the correct size in the proper hole (something that became useful later when she was learning to put the chunky puzzle shapes back in place to her animal puzzles at age 2). She also liked to play with the Infantino Activity Triangle – looks like they updated the version a bit from the one we actually purchased, but as an infant my daughter liked to slide and spin the objects back and forth and shake the toy to hear the balls circulate.

10. Blankies/Security Blankets and More Plush Soft Toys – My daughter was not the biggest fan of these as a newborn but eventually grew more attached to her snuggly blankies as she got past the 6 months old mark. My mother-in-law found the giraffe blankie from Angel Dear from a local baby store in Maryland, but it appears to be available on Amazon as well. The Maggie Simpson blankie we found at Universal Studios (gifted to my daughter courtesy of my father-in-law) and the elephant plush has crinkly ears and a rattle inside – though I don’t recall where we received it from. However you can never have too many soft plush toys – just move some aside to make room for more!Security blankets and crinkly elephant ball toy

11. Tech Toys – In this day and age, tech toys have become the norm. My daughter had an over-abundance of tech toys so maybe not all of these are necessary. However, I am including photos to give you an example of what is out there. My daughter loved her lap tops (all three!) as well as play cell phone, musical piano from Baby Einstein, “Tick Tock” clock, and flashlight. The camera I honestly don’t recall her using much but maybe because as an infant she was wondering what it was (kids are so used to seeing us take photos with our phones that I think the traditional camera toy threw her for a loop). I will say this though – with tech toys, get used to the annoying songs they sing because you will be hearing a lot of them!! My favorite ones are the ones where you can adjust the volume for obvious reasons 🙂IMG_1837_1

Laptops galore!
She had the LeapFrog My Own Leaptop in both pink and blue/green, as well as the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Smart Stages laptop in pink and loved them all (my only complaint with the Fisher Price version is the numbers on the keypad eventually rubbed off with continual use).

12. Learn to Walk Toys – My daughter and pretty much ever other baby we know loved the VTech Sit to Stand Learning Walker most. It was most helpful around the 10 month stage when she was attempting to go from crawling to standing and walking on her own, and the toy allows them to distribute their weight so that they can easily move around the house. However, from time to time, she still takes this out of the closet and pushes it around! Guess the toy just doesn’t get old!  Like other VTech toys, the songs get stuck in your head but it is very interactive and babies love it. As an alternative, we also got her the Playskool Step Start Walk ‘n Ride which doubles as both a walker and ride on toy (currently positioned in the ride on mode) but while she did play with this here and there it was mostly for the ride on aspect. For learning to walk, she preferred the VTech toy. She was also a big fan of any pull-along toy such as the pink corn popper pictured below or the more eco-friendly version made by Plan Toys. Another great alternative to your baby learn to walk is the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn table – they sell various versions including a newer product, but whichever one you get should suffice as our daughter spent many hours interacting with the various elements, sounds and textures on this table. Luckily it’s pretty gender neutral so we plan on using the same one (currently stored in our closet) when baby #2 arrives!

13. Musical instruments – If your child is musical, best to encourage their musical development at an early age! We received two different play guitars and my daughter loves pulling on their strings and pretending to play herself. Meanwhile, I was able to buy the Band-in-a-Box set from Melissa & Doug using my Pampers Rewards points (if you enter all the codes from your diapers and wipes, they can be redeemed toward toy purchases), which came with a kazoo, castanets, xylophone and harmonica. When we visited Disney World last January, my daughter also requested we purchase the purple maraca from the Mexico pavilion so this was the beginning of her musical instrument set!

14. Picnic Basket Toy – We were gifted this picnic basket for my daughter’s first birthday and she still likes to use it to play picnic. It comes with a cute picnic blanket as well as cups, plates, 6 food pieces, two forks and a musical picnic basket that plays different sounds as well as encourages interaction in the form of finding all the various shapes (circles, triangles and squares) and counting 1 to 3. Honestly it has been such a popular toy for her that I had to include it on this list.

IMG_1883_1

15. Finger puppets – Last but not least, the first year toys list would not be complete without including these silly little finger puppets. They make for great accessories in your carry on bag for plane trips or just for sitting around the house. We have received a few over the years in gift bags at parties and they never get old. Sure, the entertainment value only lasts intermittently (five to ten minutes for my daughter at most) but they are cute and a fun diversion to come back to.

Finger puppets!

That’s it for our round-up of favorite baby toys used within the first year of life. Let me know in the comments if there were any other first year baby toys that really made your child’s day!

13 Reasons Why You Should Create a Baby Registry: A Side-By-Side Comparison of the Top Baby Registry Programs

The last time I looked at baby registries in depth was about three years ago when I was expecting my first little one. For my daughter’s recent birthday, nearly everyone – friends and family, near and far – asked me if I had created a birthday wish list (gulp, I hadn’t)… That got me realizing that even though I am now preparing for my second baby, registries are super important to provide those closest to you with the opportunity to purchase items you really want or need. Additionally, they are convenient for reducing the risk for duplicates, though of course those still happen whether you have a registry or not (something to do with a slight delay in which items are purchased and when they show up as purchased off your registry).

From my research, what I have gleaned is that in the past three years baby registries have considerably upped their game! Completion discounts are higher or available earlier (allowing parents to get those last minute purchases in BEFORE baby arrives), return policies have been extended and there are so many more perks to be had from creating a baby registry.

Since there have been many recent changes in late 2017, I decided to put together this comprehensive, side-by-side look at not only the major baby retailers but lesser known companies across the U.S. I plan to go into depth on who gives the best goody bags in a later post, but for now, here is an overview of each baby registry which outlines my personal observations and info taken directly from each registry website. In some cases, I even called stores directly to verify facts that seemed ambiguous. Keep reading below for my personal registry recommendations, based on all the facts!! Also, look out for the bottom of this post where I include 9 bonus registries and stores with baby products that you can shop for online!

Planning the Perfect Disney Birthday Party for Your Toddler: Starring ‘The Little Mermaid’

As the proud mom to a Leo baby, August has been a busy month for me. In fact, the past three months have been busy months as I have learned I tend to start thinking about my child’s birthday party in June every year.  This year, maybe because I am pregnant, I started thinking about my daughter’s impending third birthday in mid-May. Since she is at the age where she is starting to be fairly vocal, I decided to ask her what she wanted for her party theme. She responded, “I want the hands, the arms and the feet.” Well…creepy. I don’t think she understood what I meant by “party theme” (I mean, hey, she was only two then) so fast forward to a few days later and I took her to a local Party City store, had her browse the themed party supplies aisle which is separated by character (think Frozen, Bubble Guppies, Despicable Me, etc.) and asked her again which one she wanted the most for her party. This time she responded, “I want Ariel and Eric.” Phew! Done deal.

There are a lot of Pinterest boards on Little Mermaid-themed parties but I wanted ours to be somewhat unique. I knew I didn’t have time to do all DIY decor but I also didn’t want to settle for the party packs available at Walmart/Party City because quite frankly a) I didn’t want it to be too over-commercialized, b) I knew there would be plenty of little boys in attendance as that seems to be the majority of my daughter’s play date friend group and I wanted something they could identify with too, and c) I didn’t want the costs to be too hefty (those licensed plate packs/napkins etc. can add up). Luckily, for my daughter’s first birthday we had gone with a loose Disney princess theme (my family loves everything Disney) so I already had Little Mermaid-themed swirl decorations and an Ariel Happy Birthday candle leftover as well as blue and green streamers from the previous year’s party.

To establish the party decor, I did a lot of research on the film itself – watching it in speed motion on my computer to pick out any special details (it was one of my favorite films as a little girl so I already had a pretty good memory but wanted to note down important scenes that we could recreate i.e. Prince Eric’s ship, Ariel’s hidden treasures, Ursula’s ferocious tentacles etc.). Then I went online and browsed many a Pinterest page and Googled pool party ideas to put it all together.

Pre-planning for your toddler’s party:

  1. Create invite wish list
  2. Research and plan appropriate theme decor
  3. About 3 weeks prior send out invitations and set an RSVP date so you can plan food serving size accordingly (I found a great free template online at HaleGrafx for an Ariel-themed party and customized the colors and design in Photoshop: see template here)
  4. Make a list of the type of food you want to serve at the party
  5. Organize all party favors, decor items, tableware, candles etc. into bags that are put out of sight of your toddler and remind him/her that it’s only for the party so don’t touch in advance! Make an inventory of each bag’s contents as you go to make it easier on yourself come the main event.
  6. Know in advance that not everything will go as planned and be okay with that!

Plan Your Toddler’s Birthday Suit: One of my cousins is a huge Little Mermaid fan so when she found out the theme for our party she sent us a one-piece Ariel bathing suit from Target in advance. To go with that, I also ensured my daughter had appropriate Ariel-themed flip flops (purchased on sale for $4 in the kid’s Disney department at JCPenney).

Sea-themed pool floaties

How to Throw The Perfect Pool Party: As it is summer and our daughter loves being in the water, we planned the event around a pool party. Our apartment building has a common recreation room adjacent to the outdoor pool so the location was perfect! In keeping with the pool party theme, we purchased plenty of pool floaties and swim rings at the local dollar store in various fish and sea creature shapes, a handful of water guns and squirters, balloons, beach balls, fish dive toys and a balloon pump from the 99 Cents Only Store. We also made sure there were a few sunscreen bottles and extra towels laying around by the pool, in case anyone forgot to bring their own, and had a special infant floatie for the few guests whose parents would be bringing along their infant siblings. Where we splurged on pool floats and accessories was in the Intex large island float that sits in the pool and includes a water slide. I saw this on Amazon (on sale for $54, regularly priced at $99) and the fact that it came with a canopy to protect the little ones from the sun was a huge bonus, plus had the weight capacity to hold up to 220 pounds meaning adults can use it too! The pool float was a HUGE hit with all our guests, parents and kids alike who ranged in age from two to five years old. It was basically like a giant floating bouncy house that could get wet, and none of our guests wanted to get out.Pool party collage: Guests enjoy playing on the giant Intex float island with water slide

The Entertainment: Adding to the magic, we hired an entertainment company to treat the kids to waterproof glitter tattoos, fun twisty balloon animals and stickers, songs and photos with a swimming Ariel! She came complete with fin and stayed in character the entire time, flipping her fin in the pool’s shallow area and leading the group in a few pool games (toss the seahorse, swim through hula hoops etc.). I swear I saw a few kids’ jaws drop when she first arrived, carried in by her assistant who bore resemblance to Prince Eric. If you live in Southern California, check them out – the company is called Crystal Castle Entertainment.

The Cake: Our cake was made by a local custom cake company called Cake and Art and was themed after Prince Eric’s ship as it collides with Ursula’s tentacles. I had asked for them to include King Triton’s golden trident but that was the only detail that was missing. Nevertheless, all the kids, especially the little boys, wanted to touch the tentacles as they looked so lifelike. I surrounded the cake with figurines from a licensed 7-piece play set (it was available for half off at JCPenney but looks like it is no longer available on their website – only from Amazon) and completed the scene with beachy decor.

Ursula, Little Mermaid, Ariel, sea witch, ship

The Food: Our guests enjoyed a homemade fruit platter (strawberries, grapes, and apples) along with cheese and crackers, goldfish, fish pretzel crackers, carrot sticks with ranch dressing, a light salad, grilled cheeseburgers and hot dogs with all the condiments including sauerkraut and relish as well as ketchup/mayo/mustard, lettuce and tomato, marinated chicken wings with soy sauce and ginger, salsa, a homemade fruit punch drink consisting of cranberry, raspberry, apple, fruit punch and a hint of Sprite, individual water bottles, lemonade, soda, beer and wine. To go along with the drinks we had plenty of blue Solo party cups and made sure all our bottles and cans were plastic (to prevent from accidents near the pool).

cookies, baking, icing, royal icing, party
Homemade starfish, seashell and seahorse cookies

As a special treat, guests also enjoyed homemade starfish, seahorse and seashell cookies that I spent over 3 hours decorating the previous day with homemade royal icing. To perfect the recipe, I actually baked two separate batches of sugar cookies, testing to see what ingredients made the flavors stand out even more, and ensuring each cookie for the final decorated versions was soft, moist and delicious. These cookies flew right off the table with some guests asking if they could take a few home so I felt very proud of that accomplishment (and so grateful I saw online that Sur La Table had the right cookie cutter shapes I needed in advance).

party decor, seashells, treasure chest
Ariel coloring sheets, fish netting, a treasure chest, sea shells, beads, jewels, chocolate coins, Little Mermaid figurines, and a glowing Ariel toy set the tone for the party

Setting the Scene With Beach & Ariel Decor: I caved and purchased a Little Mermaid-themed tablecloth, hanging Happy Birthday sign with Ariel and friends on it and photo backdrop piece, all from Party City. From the Dollar Tree, I procured actual sea shells, sea-colored gems, and a mermaid doll set with comb along with Ursula and turtle figurine from Finding Nemo (the Dollar Tree actually sells select Disney figurines in the kids’ aisle), blue and green colored plates, matching fork and spoon sets and Disney princess napkin packs (which included a photo of Ariel). Remarkably, each of these items was only a dollar!  From the 99 Cent Store, I purchased bead necklaces, blue and pink plastic pitchers, a magenta-colored fruit serving tray and plastic blue ice bucket. Lastly, I visited Jo-Ann Fabrics to procure a miniature, wooden treasure chest, beige fish netting and more sea shells, and used the chest to set the scene on the cake table complete with Ariel’s loot (consisting of the plastic bead necklaces, blue gems and a handful of chocolate gold coins which sell for 15 cents a piece at Party City). The treasure chest proved to be another big win with all the guests, sort of an extra party favor, with many of the kids pocketing the jewels as the party went on and donning it around their necks and even a few moms asked where I had gotten the fish netting and seashells from. Everyone loved how interactive the decor was and nobody hates a free favor! Lastly, I topped the table with a mermaid and clam play set that I had acquired one week earlier as my daughter’s school took a field trip to the local aquarium and when I saw it, I knew the clam and mermaid figure would add nicely to the overall look.

Let Your Friends Chip In: Toward the end of the party guests chipped away at blocks of ice in which tiny toys from the dollar store had been pre-frozen (courtesy of one of my guests) and they got to take those toys home with them as well.

Party favors

The Party Favors: In addition to the cookies and optional party room decor in the form of jewels and chocolate gold coins, each child took home a goodie bag complete with Ariel bubbles and Ariel viewfinders (with different scenes from the movie) from Party City, a pair of sunglasses, tiny plastic flute in keeping with the musical theme, party blowouts and plastic sea turtles or frogs from the dollar store, and plastic bangle bracelets for the girls (this I had leftover from last year’s party and figured why not).

Takeaways from throwing a home party with 9 of your child’s closest friends and their parents?

  1. Next time, I will invest in balloon weights as we had purchased four Mylar balloons from the dollar store to add to the festivities but midway through the event I noticed they were gone. Turns out, one of my family members saw a mom take them outside the pool room to pose for a photo and the toddler accidentally let go. Whoops! Lesson learned.
  2. When you have a lot to decorate (and also need to food prep), set aside a two hour window in advance for decorating alone.  My decorating team of helpers arrived with just an hour to spare and that left me running around grabbing items last minute in the first 30-45 minutes of the party while my guests were swimming and having a good time. It made me feel like a bad host. As I was six months pregnant, this also left me feeling a bit frazzled – you bet I was so thankful to be able to jump in the pool afterwards and just relax.
  3. Possibly throw the party at an event space or consider a caterer for extra help – purchasing all the food ingredients plus food trays and chafing fuel adds up. My dad did all the grilling himself, but throwing a home party is a lot of extra work. We spent only slightly less than last year’s party and that was held at a dedicated play space complete with staff to handle everything including the running around and food prep.

Overall, as you can see, it was an amazing party and a great way to celebrate my daughter’s third birthday!  Tune in later this week and I will add a post about another fun birthday festivity we arranged for my daughter’s third birthday – a complete Disney princess makeover!

Has anyone else thrown a Little Mermaid-themed party? Let me know how it went or any fun takeaways you had from throwing an at-home party for many of your friends.

Mom Tip: Organizing Photos By Date and Major Event to Chronicle those Important Moments and Trips

I love taking photos. Luckily for me, my husband is fairly organized and pretty computer savvy. When we first started dating, he educated me on the convenience of archiving images into organized folders. Our main home computer is now filled with hundreds of photo folders all sorted by date. Here is a screenshot from an older photo folder for example.

computer folders

I love the fact that each major event in our lives is sorted in the order that it happened and includes a brief description of the folder’s contents. I was browsing through my photo folders the other day and realized just how many fun trips we have taken our daughter on so far. She recently turned three years old but in that time she has been to more places than either my husband or I had ever been to at her age.  So far, she counts trips to three continents (North America, Asia, and Europe), and a total of 7 different theme parks (in this order, Knott’s Berry Farm, Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios FL, Universal Studios CA, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea).  U.S. trips include from the time she was seven months old, a three-hour flight to Austin, TX to a five hour solo trip with mom to Miami, FL, and various other trips in between and thereafter, including New York City, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Orlando, Atlanta, Detroit, Toledo, OH, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Boston, New Haven, San Francisco, San Diego, Solvang, CA and her first trip to the Caribbean when we took a Bahamian cruise. Phew! Listing all these places makes me itch to take another vacation 🙂

Plane icon Getting about with a baby isn’t necessarily the easiest thing in the world but it doesn’t have to be super difficult either. It just requires a bit of planning and forethought. For example, I learned when our infant daughter came with us to Europe that 15 months was perhaps a bit young for our family to fly overseas and now I know that I probably would never do that again. Why? Two words: time difference. It was simply too much for a young baby to handle, and our daughter remained on the wrong time zone THE ENTIRE TWO WEEK TRIP. Given she couldn’t fully talk yet and understand when Mommy and Daddy said it was time to go to sleep, us adults had to sleep in shifts. Erm…not pleasant. We got plenty of great photos but a majority of the daytime she was happily snoozing in her stroller while we went sightseeing, and by 1 am, she was wide awake and wanted to play.

But I got a bit off track…going back to the subject of this post, my advice to new parents is if you don’t already have a categorical organized system backed up on your home computer, in addition to wherever else you may store your images whether that be Dropbox, the Cloud or Google Photos, start to archive all those phone pictures and videos you take on your computer NOW. It will make it so much easier for you later on to find all those great images you took of your recent vacation or trip to the park or important milestone (i.e. baby’s first steps). Here is a simple step by step guide to how you can categorize your photos:

  1. Access your main pictures folder on your computer.
  2. Create a new folder by right clicking on your mouse and scrolling down to where it says “New” and then double click on the “Folder” option.
  3. If it doesn’t immediately prompt you, scroll to the New Folder you created and right click to select “Rename.”
  4. Enter the date the images were taken, beginning with the current year. We like to use dashes so everything lines up nicely i.e. 2017-08-25. Then enter a brief description. For example, your folder from yesterday’s outing could easily say “2017-08-25 Park Fun.” (Note: if you don’t organize the folder names by date, beginning with the year, you could always sort them in the order taken later on but that adds on an unnecessary step and the point of this guide is to create at-a-glance convenience.)
  5. Keeping the newly created photos folder open, go to the main folder on your computer where your phone images are automatically stored. Select all the relevant images that relate to the date and activity of the special activity folder you just created and copy and paste all images into the folder you created in step 4.

That’s it!  You can repeat this for as many different activities as you’d like and it is a simple and convenient way of finding photos that correlate to major events and travels you have taken.

Leave a comment to let me know if this worked for you or if you have an alternative system of organizing images. Either way, I highly recommend regularly creating categorized image folders on your computer as it is a great way to keep your images organized, especially if you are combining photos from multiple camera sources. With this method in place, no matter whether your children or significant other are calling your attention away and you don’t have time to give this more than a few minutes thought, you will be able to keep your photos all in one place and maintain a bit of sanity.

New Blog, New Energy – Hello Internet!

Hi everyone! I started a different mom blog back in late 2014 when my now three year old was just born. I was extremely hopeful that it should continue but new motherhood took priority and I found myself lacking a passion to keep it going (think long sleepless nights and absolutely no energy). I am starting fresh with a new domain name and new refreshed outlook on life to build a more comprehensive blog that combines several passions including my love for traveling and exploring new places, my love for reviewing products/services that work for me and my family, and creating fun experiences for my daughter that she will hopefully look back on and treasure.

As I write I am about six and a half months pregnant, once again about to explore unknown territory as I am now expecting a little boy. I am so excited to discover the benefits of having a son, but that of course means having to start over in a way as I find myself having to think about ways to make our little girl-driven home into more of a haven for a young girl and boy — i.e. redecorate the nursery, pull old baby items from the closet and see what we can salvage and what just needs to be replaced, once again explore the world of being pregnant and – gulp – get ready for my glucose screening test in a few weeks….and so much more.

Over the next few posts I hope to share thoughts on being pregnant, raising a baby, recent travels, traveling with kids, unique places for play dates with toddlers, planning a kid’s birthday party, and creating fun projects at home. Thanks for reading so far and I look forward to reading any comments from other parents facing the fears and anticipation that come with becoming a mom/dad to multiples!
